"Children should be able to do their own experimenting and their own research. Teachers, of course, can guide them by providing appropriate materials, but the essential thing is that in order for a child to understand something, he must construct it himself, he must re-invent his world."

Jean Piaget 1972

My services start with an initial phone consultation followed by an interview, integration of information and implementation of intervention strategies. To schedule an initial phone consultation, fill out my contact form.

Initial Phone Consultation

For our initial consultation, I will want to know answers to the following questions:

  • What is your child’s Name?
  • Date of birth
  • Family members
  • Is your child in school?
  • What are your concerns?
  • Who made the referral?
  • Are their concerns the same?

I will listen to your concerns and determine what steps need to be taken so your worries can be relieved. I know you want what is best for you and your child.

Step 1: Interview

With your permission and signatures on the required consent and release forms, I will come to your home and/or go to your child’s school to talk with you further and interview the teachers who are involved. I like to take pictures and/or videotape of your child while s/he is playing and interacting with others.

Other elements of the interview process:

  • Conduct a developmental observation with a detailed report and preliminary suggestions
  • Determine if any further evaluations, developmental or educational assessments are needed
  • Communicate with you every step of the way and answer your questions

Step 2: Integration

There is usually a lot of information to interpret and integrate when your child is being evaluated for a concern you have expressed. It may not be easy to go through all the paperwork and figure out what it all means. Sometimes, you may even have to travel to several different facilities to complete the evaluation process. It can be very intense and exhausting.

I am here to help you understand any or all of the following:

  • Review collateral developmental screening(s) and/or evaluations and reports with their interpretation and recommendations
  • Conduct further assessments
  • Score/Interpretation of results/report
  • Schedule consultation and discuss recommendations
  • Refer to other services as needed
  • Follow-up with telephone or Skype consultation(s)
  • Further resources
    - Websites & relevant information
    - Equipment, materials & supplies

Step 3: Intervention

All parents want their children to be the best they can be, do well in school and succeed in life. More and more information is supporting the fact that a predictive relationship exists between early social relationships, responsive care-giving, brain development, pre-academic experiences, play as the “work” of all children and later school achievement.

  • Children learn best by doing their own experimenting
  • Young children understand their worlds through construction play and materials to support it
  • Construction play is a way to get children ready for school
  • The kind of toys and play materials, how much and the way they are arranged makes a difference in their learning
  • Kids need a wide variety of play materials, choices and toys depending on their developmental ages

This step of my services provides you with the guidance you need to organize play spaces both indoors and outdoors, set up a schedule of the day that fits your family, follow the concept of “scaffolding” the play experiences to meet your child’s individual play plan, as well as how to maintain the play spaces -- all can be very challenging in your busy lives.

The following developmental interventions can be discussed when all the observations and evaluations from Step 1 (Interview) and Step 2 (Integration) are completed. Once recommendations are made from a variety of professionals, then the next question is, “Now what do we do?”
